The Tamron 24mm f/2.8 Di III OSD M1:2 was released in 2020 as part of Tamron's compact prime series for Sony FE full-frame bodies, combining a 24mm wide-angle perspective with f/2.8 maximum aperture and an unusually close 0.12m minimum focus distance enabling 1:2 (0.5x) magnification — halfway between standard close focus and 1:1 macro. 'OSD' indicates Optimised Silent Drive stepper motor for quiet video AF. At 215g and 67mm filter thread it is very compact for a full-frame wide prime.

The optical design uses 10 elements in 9 groups. Seven circular aperture blades. The 67mm filter thread is standard for Sony FE wide primes. At 215g the lens is very lightweight. Minimum focus distance of 0.12m enabling 1:2 (0.5x) maximum magnification. OSD stepper motor provides quiet, smooth AF suited to video recording. f/2.8 maximum aperture. Full Sony FE electronic communication.

The 0.12m MFD at 1:2 magnification is the defining close-focus capability: at 12cm from subject, environmental close-up photography places the subject at half life-size with the wide 24mm field of view providing environmental context behind — a composition style that a longer macro focal length cannot achieve. The 215g weight enables walk-around documentary shooting without carry burden.
