Tamron's landmark affordable f/2.8 zoom for Sony mirrorless that disrupted the market.

The Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD (model A036) was released in 2018 as the first third-party constant f/2.8 standard zoom native to Sony FE full-frame E-mount, providing the professional standard zoom range at a significantly lower price than the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM. The RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) motor provides fast, near-silent AF suited to both stills and video. The range starts at 28mm rather than 24mm — a trade-off for compact size and cost versus the wider Sony G Master.

The optical design uses 15 elements in 12 groups. Nine rounded aperture blades produce smooth bokeh. The 67mm filter thread is a common Sony FE mid-range size. At 550g the lens is moderately lighter than the Sony FE 24-70mm f/2.8 GM II. Minimum focus distance of 0.19m at the wide end and 0.39m at the tele end. RXD motor provides fast, near-silent AF for both stills and video. Constant f/2.8 aperture throughout.

The 28-75mm f/2.8's practical proposition was professional standard zoom performance at third-party pricing — approximately a third the cost of the Sony G Master at launch. The 28mm starting point provides standard wide coverage on full-frame while enabling a more compact optical formula than starting at 24mm. The 75mm long end provides slightly longer portrait reach than a 70mm terminal zoom. RXD motor enables smooth video AF pulls that the earlier A-mount era Tamron Sony zooms could not achieve.

On the used market the Tamron A036 is widely available at very affordable standard zoom prices. Condition checks: RXD AF smoothness in video mode, zoom ring operation, and front element for marks. The G2 successor (A063, 2021) provides improved optical performance and weather sealing at a modest premium. Compatible with all Sony FE-mount full-frame bodies; on APS-C E-mount bodies activates Super35 crop mode.
