The Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD (Model A056) was released in 2020 as a compact and lighter-weight constant f/2.8 telephoto zoom for Sony FE full-frame bodies, covering 70-180mm rather than the traditional 70-200mm range. The 30mm shorter range was the primary trade-off enabling the substantially lighter construction compared to Sony's FE 70-200mm GM OSS (1,395g). At 810g the Tamron provides professional constant f/2.8 aperture in a more manageable weight for travel and all-day handheld use.

The optical design uses 19 elements in 14 groups. The 67mm filter thread is smaller than the 77mm of the Sony FE 70-200mm GM OSS — a lighter and more affordable filter tier. At 810g the lens is approximately 585g lighter than the GM OSS. Minimum focus distance of 0.85m. The VXD (Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive) linear motor enables fast, near-silent AF suited for video.
