Tamron's long-running budget telephoto with macro mode, available across all DSLR mounts.

The Tamron AF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 LD Macro 1:2 (model A17) was released as a budget telephoto zoom for Canon EF and Nikon F full-frame and APS-C bodies, featuring a dual-mode design: standard telephoto from 70-300mm and a macro mode accessible at 180-300mm that enables 1:2 (half life-size) reproduction at 0.95m minimum focus distance. LD (Low Dispersion) glass is included. No VC (Vibration Compensation) is provided — this is the non-stabilised budget version of the Tamron 70-300mm lineup.

The optical design uses 13 elements in 9 groups. Nine aperture blades produce acceptable out-of-focus rendering. The 62mm filter thread is a common consumer telephoto size. At 458g the lens is moderate for a 300mm telephoto zoom. Standard minimum focus distance of 1.5m; macro mode (180-300mm focal range) achieves 1:2 magnification at 0.95m. No VC — shutter speed management required at the telephoto end. Micro USM or conventional AF motor depending on mount version. Variable aperture from f/4 at 70mm to f/5.6 at 300mm.

The 1:2 macro mode is the A17's practical differentiator from other budget telephoto zooms: at 300mm and 0.95m, small subjects can be framed at half life-size with meaningful working distance between the lens and subject — more practical for live insects and flowers than closer-focus 60mm macros at equivalent magnification. Without VC, the 300mm macro shots require a tripod or adequate shutter speed for handheld capture. The telephoto range covers outdoor sports and wildlife in adequate daylight.

On the used market the Tamron A17 is very affordable as a budget telephoto with macro mode. Condition checks: macro mode engagement (confirm the focal range transition to macro is smooth), zoom ring smoothness, and front element for marks. No VC — for handheld macro use a tripod is advisable. The Tamron SP 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD provides VC and better optics at a higher price. Compatible with full-frame and APS-C bodies in the specified mount.
