Yashica's late-1970s electronic C/Y SLR — the FR, electronic shutter, TTL LED metering, manual.

The Yashica FR is a 35mm film SLR from the late 1970s and one of Yashica's more advanced bodies on the Contax/Yashica (C/Y) bayonet, sitting above the simpler FX cameras. Developed within the Yashica and Carl Zeiss partnership, it accepted Yashica ML lenses and Carl Zeiss T* optics and was aimed at serious enthusiasts, forming the base of the FR family that later included the FR-I and FR-II.

The FR is a C/Y bayonet SLR for 35mm film with an electronically controlled focal-plane shutter and through-the-lens metering. It provides manual exposure with an LED viewfinder readout to guide aperture and shutter selection. Because the shutter is electronically timed, the camera depends on a battery to fire correctly. The FR suits a photographer who wants a more capable manual C/Y body with access to the Zeiss and Yashica ML lens systems for portraits and general work. On the used market the FR is an affordable electronic C/Y body where both foam and electronics need attention. Replace perished foam light seals and mirror-damper foam. Confirm the camera powers up and the electronically timed shutter fires across speeds with a fresh battery, and test the LED meter for correct response, as electronic faults are the main risk. Inspect the prism for haze or desilvering, and check film advance, rewind and the bayonet lock.
