Yashica's Minister — fixed-lens 35mm rangefinder, mechanical shutter, selenium meter, 1960.

The Yashica Minister, from 1960, was a fixed-lens 35mm rangefinder in Yashica's mid-priced line of the early 1960s. It was a general-purpose rangefinder aimed at amateur photographers and preceded the improved Minister D and later models in the series.

This is a 35mm coupled-rangefinder camera with a fixed Yashinon lens of moderate speed and a mechanical leaf shutter. Exposure is manual, assisted by a built-in selenium meter that requires no battery, so the fully mechanical shutter operates without a power source. The photographer sets aperture and shutter speed by hand.

The Minister suits general and travel photography for users who want a simple mechanical rangefinder without battery dependence. Its selenium meter is convenient when working, though the meter cell can weaken with age. The metal body is sturdy and the controls are straightforward.

On inspection, test the selenium meter, which often loses accuracy over time, and check the lens for haze and fungus. Confirm the leaf shutter fires correctly across its speeds and that aperture blades are clean, then verify rangefinder patch contrast and alignment. Replace perished light seals as needed.
