Zeiss - Carl Zeiss Jena Pancolar 80mm f/1.8 MC portrait short telephoto, M42 screw mount

Carl Zeiss Jena built the Pancolar 80mm f/1.8 in East Germany as the long end of the Pancolar line, a multicoated short telephoto aimed at portrait work. It came in M42 screw mount and, as a Prakticar, in the Praktica B bayonet, with sources placing production start between the late 1970s and 1983.

The optical formula is reported as 6 elements in 5 groups behind a 6-blade diaphragm running from f/1.8 to f/16. The M42 version is listed with a 58mm filter thread, 0.83m minimum focus, a 55mm barrel and 308 grams; the Praktica B version focuses closer, to about 0.65m.

Wide open through f/4 it renders with the soft, rounded separation the line is known for, though the 6-blade diaphragm turns out-of-focus highlights hexagonal once stopped down and a hood helps against side light. Unlike the 50mm f/1.8 and 55mm f/1.4 Pancolars, no source documents thoriated glass here, so their yellowing should not apply.

It is far scarcer in the UK than the 50mm Pancolar or the Biometar 80mm f/2.8, and prices reflect that, with a clean dealer-graded M42 example running to several hundred pounds. Check the aperture blades for oil and confirm the M42 threads are undamaged before committing.
