The Nikon AF Nikkor 28-70mm f/3.5-4.5D was released in 1992 as a standard zoom for Nikon F-mount full-frame. Eight elements in 7 groups including 1 aspherical element. Nine aperture blades. 52mm filter thread (rotating during focus). At 355g. 0.40m MFD. D-type autofocus.

At 355g the lens is lightweight. Minimum focus distance of 0.40m. D-type AF (screw-drive autofocus from body motor). Variable aperture from f/3.5 at 28mm to f/4.5 at 70mm. Full-frame coverage. Nikon F D-type mount.

The 28-70mm f/3.5-4.5D covers the wide-to-standard zoom range for Nikon FX at moderate weight: the aspherical element reduces distortion and coma at the 28mm end. D-type (D = distance encoding) provides subject distance information to compatible Nikon bodies for 3D matrix metering and i-TTL flash control. The rotating filter thread is a design limitation at the time of production.

On the used market the Nikon AF Nikkor 28-70mm f/3.5-4.5D is affordable as a vintage Nikon FX standard zoom. Condition checks: D-type AF response (requires body AF motor — e.g. D90, D300s, D7000 series), aperture blade condition, 52mm front element for marks. Note: rotating filter thread. Compatible with Nikon F-mount FX and DX bodies with screwdriver AF motor.
